Kristina Fuchs Sonic Unit
The stronghold of this ensemble lies in the voice being an instrument, a part of the whole. This way all the facettes of singing can be explored: Singing lyrics, being a soloist, but also comping the other musicians. The voice takes part in the build-up of the musical energy and the ‘ensemble-playing’. So the band is a whole, a Unit.
The music is modern, unconventional. Often the improvisations are collective and take a rather free character. Still the songs remain songs, melodic and beautiful. The lyrics are important, poetic, moving the performers as well as the audience as they are placed in a landscape of sonic images.
The repertoire contains mostly originals, next to playfully arranged standards. The Sonic Unit has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and many other venues, and has recorded three CDs. While most of the concerts in the first three years have also featured the guest trumpetist Eric Vloeimans, the band has recently been working with Theo Loevendie.
